“Owww… my foot” — I have exclaimed for weeks now. I recently just purchased a new monitor for my desk and it came with this big chonky power brick and being somebody that likes to keep the top of his desk tidy I quickly grabbed the VHB tape and mounted it under my desk.
This worked in the past plenty of times for all sorts of things and I figured this was the end of the story…until the next day. When it came loose and fell onto my foot. “Must of been a bad piece of tape”, I thought to myself so I decided to try again…and to no avail, it came crashing down. After purchasing multiple rolls of tape and different brands I finally took some time to realize what was happening. The brick was getting hot and causing the tape to get warm and that isn’t good for the bond to the desk.
Now I recently have been trying to learn to print functional / practical prints on my 3D printer. Equipped with about 30 minutes of tutorial in Fusion 360 I headed into battle. After measuring out my power brick and scribbling a quick design I decided to get to work.
I sat down and quickly got a design created in Fusion 360 and then excitedly decided to print it and make sure my proof of concept was going to work. This is where I hit my first snag…
I understood quickly that this was a flawed design. My attitude was is in the right direction but my design was flawed… it wouldn’t hold anything.
This is where version 2 came in which took a few minutes of editing to accomplish and then I decided to print it to make sure my proof of concept was going to work. Not only because it needed to hold it to the desk underneath but I wanted to make sure my measurements were accurate.
Now that it’s a real thing I decided to see if it fit.
Well well well… the sense of accomplishment felt closer than ever. Now to throw three more into my slicer and print them out so I can get to work.
Now that I had all of them printed out I was ready to drill them into my desk. With a power drill, a few screws and some determination I was able to get it mounted underneath and I don’t think that it’s going to be crashing onto my feet anymore.
Thanks for reading. This if my first functional print I designed and conceptualized myself. If you think the STL or GCODE files are useful just let me know and I can send them to you. DM me on twitter @ChrisStayte
